Re: ABG Problem
@kgn_piosca & d_golingay...
there's also an easier way of getting the right answer or interpretation for ABG Problems
Use the acronym RO-ME =)
RESPIRATORY: OPPOSITE
METABOLIC: EQUAL
Remember the following NORMAL VALUES:
pH = 7.35-7.45
CO2 = 35-45
HCO3 = 22-26
SAMPLE PROBLEM!
pH = 7.30
CO2 = 30
HCO3 = 20
How to solve?
pH? is less than 7.35 therefore... ACIDOTIC
Then... Follow RO-ME!
Is it OPPOSITE CO2? NO! 'coz CO2 is less than 35 (ALKALOSIS) = Trying to compensate
Is it EQUAL HCO3? YES! 'coz HCO3 is less than 22 (ACIDOSIS) = METABOLIC
INITIAL ANSWER? METABOLIC ACIDOSIS
Next question? Is it compensated?
If the pH is within NORMAL RANGE (7.35-7.45)...then COMPENSATED
If the pH is NOT within NORMAL RANGE (<7.35 or >7.45)... then UNCOMPENSATED[/size]
FINAL ANSWER? UNCOMPENSATED METABOLIC ACIDOSIS
